Not Just a Father, but Being a Dad

“Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.” This quote by Anne Geddes stuck out to me when I found out I was having a child. January 30, 2012 changed my life when my son Jaydon Christopher Pinkney was born. He was eight pounds when he was born and that first time I held him in the hospital was one of the most special moments I believe I will ever encounter in my life.
“A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.” When I read this quote from an anonymous author, I think of the promise I always told myself when I was younger that when I have a child, I would not be anything like how my father was to me. I would make sure I was there for my child.
Now that I have a son of my own, it is critical to me to do everything I can to be in his life. Thus far in his early childhood, it has been a heck of an experience. It is a humbling experience and an experience I would not trade for the world. Just seeing him grow from that little baby when he was born to this one year old who is walking and all over the place seems magical. It goes by so fast.
Many nights I stayed up or wake up in the middle of the night to get a bottle or to put him back to sleep. Days and nights where I wish I could just take the pain away that he was feeling when he was sick, but I know I cannot so just doing the best to soothe him over and calm him down. Now, hearing him call me “da da” and watching him smile, running, playing around, and learning new little words is priceless to me and I cannot understand why anyone would want to miss these type things with a child.
However, my job is still just getting started with my son, but I know thus far I am not just a father, but a dad. So with everything in me and the strength from God above, I am going to continue to be a dad in my son’s life and continue to guide and teach him, to help him become a great man one day. Jaydon Christopher Pinkney is my everything and I am his rock.
Therefore, I hope my two videos the importance of fatherhood and the voice of the people speaking on why is it important to have a father in a child's life displays the passion that I have as being a father and shows the importance of having fathers in children's lives.
